First Reading: Isaiah 58: 1-9a

1 Cry, cease not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their wicked doings, and the house of Jacob their sins.

2 For they seek me from day to day, sad desire to know my ways, as a nation that hath done justice, and hath not forsaken the judgment of their God: they ask of me the judgments of justice: they are willing to approach to God.

3 Why have we fasted, and thou hast not regarded: have we humbled our souls, and thou hast not taken notice? Behold in the day of your fast your own will is found, and you exact of all your debtors.

4 Behold you fast for debates and strife. and strike with the fist wickedly. Do not fast as you have done until this day, to make your cry to be heard on high.

5 Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? is this it, to wind his head about like a circle, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord?

6 Is not this rather the fast that I have chosen? loose the bands of wickedness, undo the bundles that oppress, let them that are broken go free, and break asunder every burden.

7 Deal thy bread to the hungry, and bring the needy and the harbourless into thy house: when thou shalt see one naked, cover him, and despise not thy own flesh.

8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy health shall speedily arise, and thy justice shall go before thy face, and the glory of the Lord shall gather thee up.

9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall hear: thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou wilt take away the chain out of the midst of thee, and cease to stretch out the finger, and to speak that which profiteth not.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 51: 3-4, 5-6ab, 18-19

3 Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity.

4 Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

5 For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.

6 To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: that thou mayst be justified in thy words and mayst overcome when thou art judged.

18 For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.

19 A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Gospel: Matthew 9: 14-15

14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but thy disciples do not fast?

15 And Jesus said to them: Can the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast.

पहला पाठ : इसायाह 58:1-9

1) प्रभु-ईश्वर यह कहता है, “पूरी शक्ति से पुकारो, तुरही की तरह अपनी आवाज़ ऊँची करो- मेरी प्रजा को उसके अपराध और याकूब के वंश को उसके पाप सुनाओ।

2) वे मुझे प्रतिदिन ढूँढ़ते हैं और मेरे मार्ग जानना चाहते हैं। एक ऐसे राष्ट्र की तरह, जिसने धर्म का पालन किया हो और अपने ईश्वर की संहिता नहीं भुलायी हो, वे मुझ से सही निर्णय की आशा करते और ईश्वर का सान्निध्य चाहते हैं।

3 (वे कहते हैं) , ’हम उपवास क्यों करते हैं, जब तू देखता भी नहीं? हम तपस्या क्यों करते हैं, जब तू ध्यान भी नहीं देता। देखो, उपवास के दिनों में तुम अपना कारबार करते और अपने सब मजदूरों से कठोर परिश्रम लेते हो।

4) तुम उपवास के दिनों लड़ाई-झगड़ा करते और करारे मुक्के मारते हो। तुम आजकल जो उपवास करते हो, उस से स्वर्ग में तुम्हारी सुनवाई नहीं होगी।

5) क्या मैं इस प्रकार का उपवास, ऐसी तपस्या का दिन चाहता हूँ, जिस में मनुष्य सरकण्डे की तरह अपना सिर झुकाये और टाट तथा राख पर लेट जाये? क्या तुम इसे उपवास और ईश्वर का सुग्राह्î दिवस कहते हो?

6) मैं जो उपवास चाहता हूँ, वह इस प्रकार है- अन्याय की बेड़ियों को तोड़ना, जूए के बन्धन खोलना, पददलितों को मुक्त करना और हर प्रकार की गुलामी समाप्त करना।

7) अपनी रोटी भूखों के साथ खाना, बेघर दरिद्रों को अपने यहाँ ठहराना। जो नंगा है, उसे कपड़े पहनाना और अपने भाई से मुँह नहीं मोड़ना।

8) तब तुम्हारी ज्योति उषा की तरह फूट निकलेगी और तुम्हारा घाव शीघ्र ही भर जायेगा। तुम्हारी धार्मिकता तुम्हारे आगे-आगे चलेगी और ईश्वर की महिमा तुम्हारे पीछे-पीछे आती रहेगी।

9) यदि तुम पुकारोगे, तो ईश्वर उत्तर देगा। यदि तुम दुहाई दोगे, तो वह कहेगा-‘देखो, मैं प्रस्तुत हूँ‘। यदि तुम अपने बीच से अत्याचार दूर करोगे, किसी पर अभियोग नहीं लगाओगे और किसी की निन्दा नहीं करोगे;

सुसमाचार : सन्त मत्ती का सुसमाचार 9:14-15

14) इसके बाद योहन के शिष्य आये और यह बोले, "हम और फरीसी उपवास किया करते हैं। आपके शिष्य ऐसा क्यों नहीं करते?"

15) ईसा ने उन से कहा, "जब तक दूल्हा साथ है, क्या बाराती शोक मना सकते हैं? किन्तु वे दिन आयेंगे, जब दुल्हा उन से बिछुड़ जायेगा। उन दिनों वे उपवास करेंगे।

📚 मनन-चिंतन

आज के सुसमाचार में प्रभु येसु हमसे कहते हैं कि उपवास करने और न करने का अपना समय है। वे स्वयं को एक दूल्हा बतलाते हैं और उनकी पूरी सेवकाई एक तरह से विवाहोत्सव की दावत है, जहाँ ईश्वर एक दूल्हे के रूप में अपनी दुल्हन अर्थात उनकी चुनी हुई प्रजा की खोज में आता है । शादी की दावत में उपवास की कोई जगह नहीं है। उपवास रखने की उनके शिष्यों के लिए कोई आवश्यकता नहीं थी । अपनी आगामी मृत्यु की ओर इशारे करते हुए प्रभु येसु कहते हैं की जब दूल्हा बिछुड़ जायेगा तब वे उपवास करेंगे।

उपदेशक ग्रन्थ में लिखा है - पृथ्वी पर हर बात का अपना वक्त और हर काम का अपना समय होता है:प्रसव करने का समय और मरने का समय; रोपने का समय और पौधा उखाड़ने का समय; इत्यादि 'और हम उनकी सूची में जोड़ सकते हैं, 'उपवास करने का समय और उपवास नहीं करने का समय'। परंपरागत रूप से चालीसा काल को उपवास का समय माना जाता है। यह एक ऐसा समय है जब हम खुद की पहचान उस येसु में करते हैं जो अपने दुखभोग, और मरण के लिए लिए येरुसलेम की ओर जाते हैं। नबी इसायाह के ग्रन्थ से लिया गया आज का पहला पाठ हमें याद दिलाता है कि हमारा उपवास हमेशा अन्य पारंपरिक तपस्याकाल की प्रथाओं में से एक, जरूरतमंद की सेवा या सेवा से जुड़ा होना चाहिए। इस पाठ के अनुसार, हमारा उपवास दलितों को मुक्त करने, भूखे को भोजन कराने, बेघर को आश्रय देने और नग्न को वस्त्र पहनाने की सेवा में हो । हम खुद के लिए मरते हैं ताकि दूसरों को अपना जीवन दे सकें। हम खुद को वंचित करते हैं ताकि जो लोग वंचित हैं उनके प्रति अधिक संवेदनशील बन सकें और अपने संसाधनों से उनकी सेवा कर सकें ।

📚 REFLECTION

Jesus’ words in the Gospel reading suggest that there is a time to fast and a time not to fast. He speaks of himself as the bridegroom, suggesting that his ministry is like a joyful wedding feast, when the divine bridegroom reaches out in love through Jesus to his bride, God’s people. There is no place for fasting at a wedding feast. There is no need for the bridegroom’s attendants, his disciples, to fast. However, alluding to his forthcoming death, he declares that the bridegroom will be taken away from his attendants and that will be an appropriate time to fast.

In the words of Qoheleth in the Jewish Scriptures, ‘there is a time for every matter under heaven’, and we could add to his list, ‘a time to fast and a time not to fast’. Lent has traditionally been understood as a time to fast. It is a time when we identify with Jesus on his way to Jerusalem, the city of his passion and death, the city where he was taken away from his disciples. The first reading from Isaiah reminds us that our fasting is always to be linked to one of the other traditional Lenten practices, almsgiving or service of the needy. According to that reading, our fasting is in the service of letting the oppressed go free, feeding the hungry, sheltering the hungry and clothing the naked. We die to ourselves so as to give to others. We deprive ourselves so as to become more sensitive to those who are deprived and to serve them from our resources.
