First Reading: Acts 6: 8-10; 7: 54-59

8 And Stephen, full of grace and fortitude, did great wonders and signs among the people.

9 Now there arose some of that which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of them that were of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit that spoke.

7:54 Now hearing these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed with their teeth at him.

55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looking up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.

56 And he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57 And they crying out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and with one accord ran violently upon him.

58 And casting him forth without the city, they stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul.

59 And they stoned Stephen, invoking, and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 31: 3cd-4, 6 and 8ab, 16bc and 17

3 Bow down thy ear to me: make haste to deliver me. Be thou unto me a God, a protector, and a house of refuge, to save me.

4 For thou art my strength and my refuge; and for thy name’s sake thou wilt lead me, and nourish me.

6 Into thy hands I commend my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, the God of truth.

8 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy. For thou hast regarded my humility, thou hast saved my soul out of distresses.

16 My lots are in thy hands. Deliver me out of the hands of my enemies; and from them that persecute me.

17 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; save me in thy mercy.

Gospel: Matthew 10: 17-22

17 But beware of men. For they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues.

18 And you shall be brought before governors, and before kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles:

19 But when they shall deliver you up, take no thought how or what to speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what to speak.

20 For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.

21 The brother also shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the son: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and shall put them to death.

22 And you shall be hated by all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved.

ख्रीस्त जयन्ती सप्ताह 
सन्त स्तेफनुस - शहीद

📒 पहला पाठ: प्रेरित-चरित 6:8-10; 7:54-60

8) स्तेफनुस अनुग्रह तथा सामर्थ्य से परिपूर्ण हो कर जनता के सामने बहुत-से चमत्मकार तथा चिन्ह दिखाता था।

9) उस समय ‘‘दास्यमुक्त’’ नामक सभागृह के कुछ सदस्य और कुरेने, सिकन्दरिया, किलिकया तथा एशिया के कुछ लोग स्तेफनुस से विवाद करने आये।

10) किन्तु वे स्तेफ़नुस के ज्ञान का सामना करने में असमर्थ थे, क्योंकि वह आत्मा से प्रेरित हो कर बोलता था।

54) वे स्तेफ़नुस की बातें सुन कर आगबबूला हो गये और दाँत पीसते रहे।

55) स्तेफ़नुस ने, पवित्र आत्मा से पूर्ण हो कर, स्वर्ग की ओर दृष्टि की और ईश्वर की महिमा को तथा ईश्वर के दाहिने विराजमान ईसा को देखा।

56) वह बोल उठा, ’’मैं स्वर्ग को खुला और ईश्वर के दाहिने विराजमान मानव पुत्र को देख रहा हूँ’’।

57) इस पर उन्होंने ऊँचे स्वर से चिल्ला कर अपने कान बन्द कर लिये। वे सब मिल कर उस पर टूट पड़े

58) और उसे शहर के बाहर निकाल कर उस पर पत्थर मारते रहे। गवाहों ने अपने कपड़े साऊल नामक नवयुवक के पैरों पर रख दिये।

59) जब लोग स्तेफ़नुस पर पत्थर मार रहे थे, तो उसने यह प्रार्थना की, ’’प्रभु ईसा! मेरी आत्मा को ग्रहण कर!’’

60) तब वह घुटने टेक कर ऊँचे स्वर से बोला, ’’प्रभु! यह पाप इन पर मत लगा!’’ और यह कह कर उसने प्राण त्याग दिये।

📙 सुसमाचार : सन्त मत्ती 10:17-22

17) ’’मनुष्यों से सावधान रहो। वे तुम्हें अदालतों के हवाले करदेंगे और अपने सभागृहों में तुम्हें कोडे़ लगायेंगे।

18) तुम मेरे कारण शासकों और राजाओं के सामने पेश किये जाओगे, जिससे मेरे विषय में तुम उन्हें और गै़र-यहूदियों को साक्ष्य दे सको।

19) ’’जब वे तुम्हें अदालत के हवाले कर रहे हों, तो यह चिन्ता नहीं करोगे कि हम कैसे बोलेंगे और क्या कहेंगे। समय आने पर तुम्हें बोलने को शब्द दिये जायेंगे,

20) क्योंकि बोलने वाले तुम नहीं हो, बल्कि पिता का आत्मा है, जो तुम्हारे द्वारा बोलता है।

21) भाई अपने भाई को मृत्यु के हवाले कर देगा और पिता अपने पुत्र को। संतान अपने माता पिता के विरुद्ध उठ खड़ी होगी और उन्हें मरवा डालेगी।

22) मेरे नाम के कारण सब लोग तुम से बैर करेंगे, किन्तु जो अन्त तक धीर बना रहेगा, उसे मुक्ति मिलेगी।

मनन-चिंतन

क्रिसमस का संदेश खुशी और शांति का संदेश है। बालक येसु के जन्म के बारे में चरवाहों को बताते हुए स्वर्गदूत कहता है, “मैं आप को सभी लोगों के लिए बड़े आनन्द का सुसमाचार सुनाता हूँ” (लूकस 2:10)। फिर भी आज के पाठ उनके शिष्यों को अत्याचार सहने के लिए हमेशा तैयार रहने को कहते हैं। क्या इसका मतलब यह है कि क्रिसमस का आनंद कुछ ही समय के लिए सीमित है? बिलकूल नही। मसीह के शिष्यों को सताए जाने के बीच भी ईश्वरीय सांत्वना का आनंद मिलता है। उत्पीड़न का समय साक्ष्य देने का समय है। वह एक ऐसा समय है जब प्रभु ईश्वर हमारे माध्यम से बोलेंगे। वह एक ऐसा समय है जब ईश्वर के स्वर्गदूत हमें दिलासा देते हैं। गेथसेमनी की बारी में, प्रभु येसु ने कष्टदायी पीड़ा का अनुभव किया। सुसमाचार लेखक हमसे कहता है, “तब उन्हें स्वर्ग का एक दूत दिखाई पड़ा, जिसने उन को ढारस बँधाया" (लूकस 22:43)। उत्पीड़न के बीच, संत पौलुस और बरनबास ने विश्वासियों को प्रोत्साहित करते हुए कहा, "हमें बहुत से कष्ट सह कर ईश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश करना है"। (प्रेरित-चरित 14:22) इस प्रकार यह स्पष्ट है कि हमारे कष्टों और उत्पीड़न में ईश्वर हमें आराम और सहायता देते हैं ताकि इन कष्टों के माध्यम से हम ईश्वर के राज्य में प्रवेश कर सकें।

REFLECTION

The message of Christmas is that of joy and peace. The angel spoke to the shepherds about “good news of great joy” (Lk 2:10) when he spoke about the birth of Jesus. Yet today’s reading speaks about the persecutions the disciples of Jesus should be prepared for. Does this mean that the Christmas joy does not last? Of course not! Even in the midst of persecutions the disciples of Christ enjoy divine consolation. The time of persecution is a time of witnessing. It is a time when God speaks through us. It is a time God’s angels comfort us. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus experienced the excruciating agony. We are told by the evangelist that “an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength” (Lk 22:43). In the midst of all persecutions, St. Paul and Barnabas encouraged the believers saying, “It is through many persecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God” (Act 14:22). Thus it is clear that God comforts and assists us in our sufferings and persecutions so that through these tribulations we can enter the Kingdom of God.
