Feast day of St Francis Xavier

 

On Dec. 3, the Roman Catholic Church honors St. Francis Xavier, one of the first Jesuits who went on to evangelize vast portions of Asia.

Francis Xavier was born during 1506 in the Kingdom of Navarre, a region now divided between Spain and France. His mother was an esteemed heiress, and his father an adviser to King John III. While his brothers entered the military, Francis followed an intellectual path to a college in Paris. There he studied philosophy, and later taught it after earning his masters degree.

In Paris, the young man would discover his destiny with the help of his long-time friend Peter Faber, and an older student named Ignatius Loyola – who came to Paris in 1528 to finish a degree, and brought together a group of men looking to glorify God with their lives.

At first, personal ambition kept Francis from heeding God's call. Ignatius' humble and austere lifestyle did not appeal to him. But the older student, who had undergone a dramatic conversion, often posed Christ's question to Francis: “What will it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

Gradually, Ignatius convinced the young man to give up his own plans and open his mind to God's will. In 1534, Francis Xavier, Peter Faber, and four other men joined Ignatius in making a vow of poverty, chastity, and dedication to the spread of the Gospel through personal obedience to the Pope.

Francis became a priest in 1537. Three years later, Pope Paul III confirmed Ignatius and his companions as a religious order, the Jesuits. During that year, the king of Portugal asked the Pope to send missionaries to his newly-acquired territories in India.

Together with another Jesuit, Simon Rodriguez, Francis first spent time in Portugal caring for the sick and giving instruction in the faith. On his 35th birthday, he set sail for Goa on India's west coast. There, however, he found the Portuguese colonists causing disgrace to the Church through their bad behavior.

This situation spurred the Jesuit to action. He spent his days visiting prisoners and the sick, gathering groups of children together to teach them about God, and preaching to both Portuguese and Indians. Adopting the lifestyle of the common people, he lived on rice and water in a hut with a dirt floor.

Xavier's missionary efforts among them often succeeded, though he had more difficulty converting the upper classes, and encountered opposition from both Hindus and Muslims. In 1545 he extended his efforts to Malaysia, before moving on to Japan in 1549.

Becoming fluent in Japanese, Francis instructed the first generation of Japanese Catholic converts. Many said that they were willing to suffer martyrdom, rather than renounce the faith brought by the far-flung Jesuit.

St. Francis Xavier became ill and died on Dec. 3, 1552, while seeking a way to enter the closely-guarded kingdom of China. In 1622, both St. Francis Xavier and St. Ignatius Loyola were canonized on the same day.

📒 पहला पाठ : यिरमियाह का ग्रन्थ 1:4-8

4) प्रभु की वाणी मुझे यह कहते हुए सुनाई पड़ी-

5) “माता के गर्भ में तुम को रचने से पहले ही, मैंने तुम को जान लिया। तुम्हारे जन्म से पहले ही, मैंने तुम को पवत्रि किया। मैंने तुम को राष्ट्रों का नबी नियुक्त किया।“

6) मैंने कहा, “आह, प्रभु-ईश्वर! मुझे बोलना नहीं आता। मैं तो बच्चा हूँ।“

7) परन्तु प्रभु ने उत्तर दिया, “यह न कहो- मैं तो बच्चा हूँ। मैं जिन लोगों के पास तुम्हें भेजूँगा, तुम उनके पास जाओगे और जो कुछ तुम्हें बताऊगा, तुम वही कहोगे।

8) उन लोगों से मत डरो। मैं तुम्हारे साथ हूँ। मैं तुम्हारी रक्षा करूँगा। यह प्रभु वाणी है।“

📕 दूसरा पाठ: कुरिन्थियों के नाम सन्त पौलुस का दूसरा पत्र 4:7-15

7) यह अमूल्य निधि हम में-मिट्टी के पात्रों में रखी रहती है, जिससे यह स्पष्ट हो जाये कि यह अलौकिक सामर्थ्य हमारा अपना नहीं, बल्कि ईश्वर का है।

8) हम कष्टों से घिरे रहते हैं, परन्तु कभी हार नहीं मानते, हम परेशान होते हैं, परन्तु कभी निराश नहीं होते।

9) हम पर अत्याचार किया जाता है, परन्तु हम अपने को परित्यक्त नहीं पाते। हम को पछाड़ दिया जाता है, परन्तु हम नष्ट नहीं होते।

10) हम हर समय अपने शरीर में ईसा के दुःखभोग तथा मृत्यु का अनुभव करते हैं, जिससे ईसा का जीवन भी हमारे शरीर में प्रत्यक्ष हो जाये।

11) हमें जीवित रहते हुए ईसा के कारण निरन्तर मृत्यु का सामना करना पड़ता है, जिससे ईसा का जीवन भी हमारे नश्वर शरीर में प्रत्यक्ष हो जाये।

12) इस प्रकार हम में मृत्यु क्रियाशील है और आप लोगों में जीवन।

13) धर्मग्रन्थ कहता है- मैंने विश्वास किया और इसलिए मैं बोला। हम विश्वास के उसी मनोभाव से प्रेरित हैं। हम विश्वास करते हैं और इसलिए हम बोलते हैं।

14) हम जानते हैं कि जिसने प्रभु ईसा को पुनर्जीवित किया, वही ईसा के साथ हम को भी पुनर्जीवित कर देगा और आप लागों के साथ हम को भी अपने पास रख लेगा।

15) सब कुछ आप लोगों के लिए हो रहा है, ताकि जिस प्रकार बहुतों में कृपा बढ़ती जाती है, उसी प्रकार ईश्वर की महिमा के लिए धन्यवाद की प्रार्थना करने वालों की संख्या बढ़ती जाये।

📙 सुसमाचार : सन्त लूकस का सुसमाचार 10:1-16

1) इसके बाद प्रभु ने अन्य बहत्तर शिष्य नियुक्त किये और जिस-जिस नगर और गाँव में वे स्वयं जाने वाले थे, वहाँ दो-दो करके उन्हें अपने आगे भेजा।

2) उन्होंने उन से कहा, ’’फ़सल तो बहुत है, परन्तु मज़दूर थोड़े हैं; इसलिए फ़सल के स्वामी से विनती करो कि वह अपनी फ़सल काटने के लिए मज़दूरों को भेजे।

3) जाओ, मैं तुम्हें भेडि़यों के बीच भेड़ों की तरह भेजता हूँ।

4) तुम न थैली, न झोली और न जूते ले जाओ और रास्तें में किसी को नमस्कार मत करो।

5) जिस घर में प्रवेश करते हो, सब से पहले यह कहो, ’इस घर को शान्ति!’

6) यदि वहाँ कोई शान्ति के योग्य होगा, तो उस पर तुम्हारी शान्ति ठहरेगी, नहीं तो वह तुम्हारे पास लौट आयेगी।

7) उसी घर में ठहरे रहो और उनके पास जो हो, वही खाओ-पियो; क्योंकि मज़दूर को मज़दूरी का अधिकार है। घर पर घर बदलते न रहो।

8) जिस नगर में प्रवेश करते हो और लोग तुम्हारा स्वागत करते हैं, तो जो कुछ तुम्हें परोसा जाये, वही खा लो।

9) वहाँ के रोगियों को चंगा करो और उन से कहो, ’ईश्वर का राज्य तुम्हारे निकट आ गया है’।

10) परन्तु यदि किसी नगर में प्रवेश करते हो और लोग तुम्हारा स्वागत नहीं करते, तो वहाँ के बाज़ारों में जा कर कहो,

11 ’अपने पैरों में लगी तुम्हारे नगर की धूल तक हम तुम्हारे सामने झाड़ देते हैं। तब भी यह जान लो कि ईश्वर का राज्य आ गया है।’

12) मैं तुम से यह कहता हूँ- न्याय के दिन उस नगर की दशा की अपेक्षा सोदोम की दशा कहीं अधिक सहनीय होगी।

13) ’’धिक्कार तुझे, खोराजि़न! धिक्कार तुझे, बेथसाइदा! जो चमत्कार तुम में किये गये हैं, यदि वे तीरुस और सीदोन में किये गये होते, तो उन्होंने न जाने कब से टाट ओढ़ कर और भस्म रमा कर पश्चात्ताप किया होता।

14) इसलिए न्याय के दिन तुम्हारी दशा की अपेक्षा तीरुस और सिदोन की दशा कहीं अधिक सहनीय होगी।

15) और तू, कफ़रनाहूम! क्या तू स्वर्ग तक ऊँचा उठाया जायेगा? नहीं, तू अधोलोक तक नीचे गिरा दिया जायेगा?

16) ’’जो तुम्हारी सुनता है, वह मेरी सुनता है और जो तुम्हारा तिरस्कार करता है, वह मेरा तिरस्कार करता है। जो मेरा तिरस्कार करता है, वह उसका तिरस्कार करता है, जिसने मुझे भेजा है।’’

📚 मनन-चिंतन

केवल ज़रूरत महसूस करने पर येसु कोई कार्य नहीं करते हैं। वे पिता से संकेत की तलाश करते हैं। उन्हें ईश्वर के राज्य में मजदूरों की बड़ी आवश्यकता महसूस होती है। फिर भी वे सीधे ईश्वर के राज्य के लिए मज़दूरों की भर्ती शुरू नहीं करते हैं, लेकिन पिता से एक इरादे और प्राधिकरण की प्रतीक्षा करते हैं। ईश्वर के राज्य में प्रत्येक मजदूर को ईश्वर पिता द्वारा नियुक्त किया जाता है। कोई भी स्वयं अपनी मर्जी से स्वर्गराज्य का मजदूर नहीं बन सकता है। इसलिए प्रभु अपने शिष्यों से कहते हैं कि वे फसल के स्वामी से प्रार्थना करें कि वे अपनी फ़सल काटने के लिए मजदूरों को भेजें। एक बुलाहट अक्सर कुछ धार्मिक कार्य करने के लिए बुलाये जाने के रूप में समझी जाती है। एक विश्वासी को चाहिए कि वह अपने जीवन के हर कार्य को ईश्वर द्वारा दिये गये कर्तव्य के रूप में देखे। जब हम ईश्वर के सामने अपने कर्तव्यों को निभाने लगते हैं, तब हमारे कार्य करने का तरीका भी अनोखा बन जाता है। एक शिक्षक जो अपने शिक्षा प्रदान करने के कार्य को ईश्वरीय आह्वान के रूप में देखता है, ईश्वर को प्रसन्न करने के लिए अपना कर्तव्य निभाएगा; इस प्रकार एक डॉक्टर, नर्स, मैकेनिक या व्यापारी भी। इसलिए एक ख्रीस्तीय विश्वासी को सवाल पूछने की ज़रूरत है – प्रभु क्या चाहते हैं कि मैं करूँ? यह संत फ्रांसिस ज़ेवियर के जीवन में सच था जिसका त्यौहार आज हम मनाते हैं। वे प्रभु से आज्ञा लेते रहे और प्रभु की वाणी के आज्ञाकारी रहे। एक सच्चा ख्रीस्तीय विश्वासी प्रभु और उसके राज्य के लिए एक सैनिक है – जो ईश्वर की आज्ञाओं का इंतज़ार करता है और नियमित रीति से उसका पालन करता है।

📚 REFLECTION

Sensing a need alone does not move Jesus to act. He looks for the signal from the Father. He sees a great need for labourers in the Kingdom of God. Yet he does not start recruiting personnel for the Kingdom, but waits for an intention and authorization from the Father. Every labourer in the Kingdom of God is appointed by God the Father. One cannot force oneself as a labourer of the Kingdom. Hence he tells his disciples to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to do his harvesting. A Vocation is often narrowly understood as a call to do some religious task. For a believer his way of life has to be seen as an assignment by God. When God is in picture our way of doing the task will be divine. A teacher considering teaching as a divine call will carry out his/her duty as pleasing to God; so also a doctor, nurse, mechanic or a businessman. Hence a Christian needs to keep asking the question – what does the Lord want me to do? This was true of St. Francis Xavier whose feast we celebrate today. He kept taking orders from the Lord and was obedient to the voice of the Lord. A true Christian is a soldier for the Lord and his Kingdom.
