First Reading: First John 3:22 – 4: 6

22 And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.

23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ: and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us.

24 And he that keepeth his commandments, abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

4:1 Dearly beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits if they be of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 By this is the spirit of God known. Every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God:

3 And every spirit that dissolveth Jesus, is not of God: and this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh, and he is now already in the world.

4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome him. Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5 They are of the world: therefore of the world they speak, and the world heareth them.

6 We are of God. He that knoweth God, heareth us. He that is not of God, heareth us not. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 2: 7bc-8, 10-12a

7 The Lord hath said to me: Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee.

8 Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession.

10 And now, O ye kings, understand: receive instruction, you that judge the earth.

11 Serve ye the Lord with fear: and rejoice unto him with trembling.

12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, and you perish from the just way. When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, blessed are all they that trust in him.

Gospel: Matthew 4: 12-17, 23-25

12 And when Jesus had heard that John was delivered up, he retired into Galilee:

13 And leaving the city Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capharnaum on the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim;

14 That it might be fulfilled which was said by Isaias the prophet:

15 Land of Zabulon and land of Nephthalim, the way of the sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles:

16 The people that sat in darkness, hath seen great light: and to them that sat in the region of the shadow of death, light is sprung up.

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say: Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom: and healing all manner of sickness and every infirmity, among the people.

24 And his fame went throughout all Syria, and they presented to him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and such as were possessed by devils, and lunatics, and those that had palsy, and he cured them:

25 And much people followed him from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

पहला पाठ: 1योहन 3:22-4:6

22) हम उस से जो कुछ माँगेंगे, वह हमें वहीं प्रदान करेगा; क्योंकि हम उसकी आज्ञाओं को पालन करते हैं और वही करते हैं, जो उसे अच्छा लगता है।

23) और उसकी आाज्ञा यह है कि हम उसके पुत्र ईसा मसीह के नाम में विश्वास करें और एक दूसरे को प्यार करें, जैसा कि मसीह ने हमें आदेश दिया।

24) जो ईश्वर की आज्ञाओं का पालन करता है, वह ईश्वर में निवास करता है और ईश्वर उस में और हम जानते हैं कि वह हम में निवास करता है; क्योंकि उसने हम को आपना आत्मा प्रदान किया है।

4:1) प्रिय भाइयो! प्रत्येक आत्मा पर विश्वास मत करो। आत्माओं की परीक्षा कर देखो कि वे ईश्वर के हैं या नहीं; क्योंकि बहुत-से झूठे नबी संसार में आये हैं।

2) ईश्वर के आत्मा की पहचान इस में हैः प्रत्येक आत्मा जो यह स्वीकार करता है कि ईसा मसीह सचमुच मनुष्य बन गये हैं, ईश्वर का है

3) और प्रत्येक आत्मा, जो इस प्रकार ईसा को स्वीकार नहीं करता; ईश्वर का नहीं है और वह ईश्वर-विरोधी है। तुमने सुना है कि वह संसार में आने वाला है और अब तो वह संसार में आ चुका है।

4) बच्चो! तुम ईश्वर के हो और तुमने उन लोगों पर विजय पायी है; क्योंकि जो तुम में हैं, वह उस से महान् हैं, जो संसार में है।

5) वे संसार के हैं और इसलिए वे संसार की बातें करते हैं और संसार उनकी सुनता है।

6) किन्तु हम ईश्वर के हैं और जो ईश्वर को पहचानता है, वह हमारी सुनता है। जो ईश्वर का नहीं है, वह हमारी बात सुनना नहीं चाहता। हम इसके द्वारा सत्य के आत्मा और भ्रान्ति की आत्मा की पहचान कर सकते हैं।

सुसमाचार : सन्त मत्ती 4:12-17, 23-25

(12) ईसा ने जब यह सुना कि योहन गिरफ्तार हो गया है, तो वे गलीलिया चले गये।

(13) वे नाज़रेत नगर छोड कर, ज़बुलोन और नफ्ताली के प्रान्त में, समुद्र के किनारे बसे हुए कफ़रनाहूम नगर में रहने लगे।

(14) इस तरह नबी इसायस का यह कथन पूरा हुआ-

(15) ज़बुलोन प्रान्त! नफ्ताली प्रान्त! समुद्र के पथ पर, यर्दन के उस पार, ग़ैर-यहूदियों की गलीलिया! अंधकार में रहने

(16) वाले लोगों ने एक महती ज्योति देखी; मृत्यु के अन्धकारमय प्रदेश में रहने वालों पर ज्योति का उदय हुआ।

(17) उस समय से ईसा उपदेश देने और यह कहने लगे, "पश्चात्ताप करो। स्वर्ग का राज्य निकट आ गया है।"

(23) ईसा उनके सभागृहों में शिक्षा देते, राज्य के सुसमाचार का प्रचार करते और लोगों की हर तरह की बीमारी और निर्बलता दूर करते हुए, सारी गलीलिया में घूमते रहते थे।

(24) उनका नाम सारी सीरिया में फैल गया। लोग मिर्गी, लक़वा आदि नाना प्रकार की बीमारियों और कष्टों से पीड़ित सब रोगियों को और अपदूतग्रस्तों को ईसा के पास ले आते और वे उन्हें चंगा करते थे।

(25) गलीलिया, देकापोलिस, येरूसालेम, यहूदिया और यर्दन के उस पार से आया हुआ एक विशाल जनसमूह उनके पीछे-पीछे चलता था।

📚 मनन-चिंतन

हेरोद के द्वारा संत योहन बप्तिस्ता को गिरफ़्तार किए जाने के बाद प्रभु येसु अपना मिशन कार्य प्रारम्भ करते हैं। नफ़ताली और ज़ेबुलोन के इस क्षेत्र को जहां से प्रभु येसु अपना मिशन कार्य प्रारम्भ करते हैं, सन्त मत्ती इसे ग़ैर-यहूदियों की गलिली कहते हैं। पुराने व्यवस्थान में गलिली को राष्ट्रों की गलिली कहकर पुकारा जाता था (इसायस ९:१-३) क्योंकि यही प्रतिज्ञात देश में प्रवेश करने का द्वार था। इस स्थान का सम्पर्क निरंतर नए लोगों और नयी-नयी संस्कृतियों से होता रहता था। यह प्रतिज्ञात देश का भाग होते हुए भी भ्रष्ट एवं अंधकारमय प्रदेश के रूप में जाना जाता था। यहाँ के लोग चुनी हुई प्रजा में नहीं गिने जाते थे, और उन्हें हेय दृष्टि से देखा जाता था। वे प्रभु के प्रेम की अज्ञानता के अंधकार में भटकते थे। शायद वही ऐसे लोग थे जिन्हें मुक्तिदाता की सबसे अधिक ज़रूरत थी।

इसलिए हम देखते हैं कि प्रभु येसु इसी स्थान पर अपना निवास बनाते और अपना मिशन कार्य प्रारम्भ करते हैं। जो स्थान नगण्य और तुच्छ समझा जाता था वही महान और ईश्वर के मिशन कार्य को प्रारम्भ करने का स्थान बन जाता है। प्रभु उनका अंधकार दूर करने आए हैं, और ईश्वरीय प्रेम की ज्योति जलाने आए हैं। गलिली से अपना मुक्तिकार्य प्रारम्भ करते हुए ईश्वर यह दर्शाते हैं कि धर्मियों से अधिक वह अधर्मियों को बुलाने आए हैं, क्योंकि धर्मियों से अधिक पापियों को ईश्वर की ईश्वर की आवश्यकता है (मत्ती ९:१३)। आज प्रत्येक वह स्थान जहाँ ईश्वर का प्रेम नहीं पहुँचा है, वह गलिली है। आइए हम ईश्वर के उस अनंत प्रेम को सब जनों तक पहुँचाएँ।आज भी अनेक लोग हैं जो अंधकार में और जो जीवन की ज्योति की खोज में हैं। प्रभु ही वह जीवन की ज्योति हैं। (योहन ८:१२)।

📚 REFLECTION

Today we see Jesus beginning his public ministry after the arrest of John the Baptist by Herod. St. Matthew calls this area Naphtali and Zebulon where Jesus begins his ministry, as new Galilee of the Gentiles. In Old Testament times Galilee was called the Galilee of the nations (Is 9:1-3) because it was the entry point in the geographical territory of Israel, the promised land. This place constantly came in contact with different nations and cultures. Even it was part of the promised land but it was considered as corrupt and place of darkness. People here were not considered as especially chosen, but like they were treated with low esteem and like outsiders. They lived in the darkness of the ignorance of the Lord. In fact they were the people who needed a saviour more than anybody else.

Therefore we see Jesus making his dwelling and beginning his saving ministry from this place. The place which was discarded as the most insignificant place becomes very prominent place and starting point of God’s saving mission. He has come to dispel the darkness of sin and ignorance of God’s love for them. By starting his ministry from Galilee, God shows that more than righteous, he has come for sinners, because sinners need God more than the righteous (Mt. 9:13). Today every place where this good news of God’s love has not reached, is a Galilee. Let us make known God’s love to all, the love he has shown in his son Jesus our saviour. There are great number of people who still remain in dark, who still need to see the light of the world (John 8:12).
