First Reading: Genesis 4: 1-15, 25

1 And Adam knew Eve his wife: who conceived and brought forth Cain, saying: I have gotten a man through God.

2 And again she brought forth his brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd, and Cain a husbandman.

3 And it came to pass after many days, that Cain offered, of the fruits of the earth, gifts to the Lord.

4 Abel also offered of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat: and the Lord had respect to Abel, and to his offerings.

5 But to Cain and his offerings he had no respect: and Cain was exceedingly angry, and his countenance fell.

6 And the Lord said to him: Why art thou angry? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7 If thou do well, shalt thou not receive? but if ill, shall not sin forthwith be present at the door? but the lust thereof shall be under thee, and thou shalt have dominion over it.

8 And Cain said to Abel his brother: Let us go forth abroad. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him.

9 And the Lord said to Cain: Where is thy brother Abel? And he answered, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper?

10 And he said to him: What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth to me from the earth.

11 Now, therefore, cursed shalt thou be upon the earth, which hath opened her mouth and received the blood of thy brother at thy hand.

12 When thou shalt till it, it shall not yield to thee its fruit: a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be upon the earth.

13 And Cain said to the Lord: My iniquity is greater than that I may deserve pardon.

14 Behold thou dost cast me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy face, and I shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth: every one, therefore, that findeth me, shall kill me.

15 And the Lord said to him: No, it shall not be so: but whosoever shall kill Cain, shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, that whosoever found him should not kill him.

25 Adam also knew his wife again: and she brought forth a son, and called his name Seth, saying: God hath given me another seed, for Abel whom Cain slew.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 50: 1 and 8, 16bc-17, 20-21

1 A psalm for Asaph. The God of gods, the Lord hath spoken: and he hath called the earth. From the rising of the sun, to the going down thereof:

8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices: and thy burnt offerings are always in my sight.

16 But to the sinner God hath said: Why dost thou declare my justices, and take my covenant in thy mouth?

17 Seeing thou hast hated discipline: and hast cast my words behind thee.

20 Sitting thou didst speak against thy brother, and didst lay a scandal against thy mother’s son:

21 These things hast thou done, and I was silent. Thou thoughtest unjustly that I should be like to thee: but I will reprove thee, and set before thy face.

Gospel: Mark 8: 11-13

11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, asking him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

12 And sighing deeply in spirit, he saith: Why doth this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, a sign shall not be given to this generation.

13 And leaving them, he went up again into the ship, and passed to the other side of the water.

पहला पाठ : उत्पत्ति ग्रन्थ 4:1-15.25

1) आदम का अपनी पत्नी से संसर्ग हुआ और वह गर्भवती हो गयी। उसने काइन को जन्म दिया और कहा, ''मैंने प्रभु की कृपा से एक मनुष्य को जन्म दिया''।

2) फिर उसने काइन के भाई हाबिल को जन्म दिया। हाबिल भेड़े-बकरियों का चरवाहा बना और काइन खेती करता था।

3) कुछ समय बाद काइन ने भूमि उपज का कुछ अंश प्रभु को अर्पित किया।

4) हाबिल ने भी अपनी सर्वोत्तम भेड़ों के पहलौठे मेमनों को प्रभु को अर्पित किया। प्रभु ने हाबिल पर प्रसन्न हो कर उसकी भेंट स्वीकार की,

5) किन्तु उसने काइन और उसकी भेंट को अस्वीकार किया। काइन बहुत क्रुद्ध हुआ और उसका चेहरा उतर गया।

6) प्रभु ने काइन से कहा, ''तुम क्यों क्रोध करते हो और तुम्हारा चेहरा उतरा हुआ क्यों है?

7) जब तुम भला करोगे, तो प्रसन्न होगे। यदि तुम भला नहीं करोगे, तो पाप हिंस्र पशु की तरह तुम पर झपटने के लिए तुम्हारे द्वार पर घात लगा कर बैठेगा। क्या तुम उसका दमन कर सकोगे?

8) काइन ने अपने भाई हाबिल से कहा, ''हम टहलने चलें''। बाहर जाने पर काइन ने हाबिल पर आक्रमण किया और उसे मार डाला।

9) प्रभु ने काइन से कहा, ''तुम्हारा भाई हाबिल कहाँ है?'' उसने उत्तर दिया, ''मैं नहीं जानता। क्या मैं अपने भाई का रखवाला हूँ?''

10) प्रभु ने कहा, ''तुमने क्या किया? तुम्हारे भाई का रक्त भूमि पर से मुझे पुकार रहा है। भूमि ने मुँह फैला कर तुम्हारे भाई का रक्त ग्रहण किया, जिसे तुमने बहाया है।

11) इसलिए तुम शापित हो कर उस भूमि से निर्वासित किये जाओगे।

12) यदि तुम उस भूमि पर खेती करोगे, तो वह कुछ भी पैदा नहीं करेगी। तुम आवारे की तरह पृथ्वी पर मारे-मारे फिरोगे''।

13) तब काइन ने प्रभु से कहा, ''मैं यह दण्ड नहीं सह सकता।

14) तू मुझे उपजाऊ भूमि से निर्वासित कर रहा है। मुझे तुझ से दूर रहना पड़ेगा। मैं आवारे की तरह पृथ्वी पर मारा-मारा फिरूँगा और भेंट होने पर कोई भी मेरा वध कर देगा।''

15) ''नहीं! जो काइन का वध करेगा, उस से इसका सात गुना बदला लिया जायेगा।'' कहीं ऐसा न हो कि काइन से भेंट होने पर कोई उसका वध करे, इसलिए प्रभु ने काइन पर एक चिन्ह अंकित किया।

25) आदम का अपनी पत्नी से फिर संसर्ग हुआ। उसने पुत्र प्रसव किया और उसका नाम सेत रखा। उसने कहा, ''काइन ने हाबिल का वध किया, इसलिए प्रभु ने उसके बदले मुझे एक अन्य पुत्र प्रदान किया''।

सुसमाचार : सन्त मारकुस का सुसमाचार 8:11-13

11) फ़रीसी आ कर ईसा से विवाद करने लगे। उनकी परीक्षा लेने के लिए वे स्वर्ग की ओर का कोई चिन्ह माँगते थे।

12) ईसा ने गहरी आह भर कर कहा, ’’यह पीढ़ी चिन्ह क्यों माँगती है? मैं तुम लोगों से यह कहता हॅू- इस पीढ़ी को कोई भी चिन्ह नहीं दिया जायेगा।’’

13) इस पर ईसा उन्हें छोड़ कर नाव पर चढ़े और उस पार चले गये।

📚 मनन-चिंतन

हाबिल और उसकी भेंट से ईश्वर प्रसन्न था, लेकिन काईन की भेंट को ईश्वर ने अस्वीकार किया। यह निश्चित नहीं है कि ईश्वर ने काईन की भेंट को क्यों अस्वीकार कर दिया। संभवतः उनका रवैया अनुचित था या फिर उनकी भेंट ईश्वर की गरिमा से मेल नहीं खाती थी । ईश्वर को भेंट अर्पित करने में, हम हमारे उद्देश्यों और हमारे द्वारा प्रदान की जाने वाली भेंट की गुणवत्ता, हमारे समय, हमारी प्रतिभा और प्रयासों पर ध्यान देवें।

भेंट अस्वीकार होने के बाद, ईश्वर ने काईन को गलती को सुधारने और फिर से प्रयास करने का मौका दिया। काईन ने मना कर दिया, और उसका बाकी जीवन एक चौंकाने वाला उदाहरण है कि उन लोगों के साथ क्या होता है जो अपनी गलतियों को स्वीकार करने से इनकार करते हैं। फरीसियों ने काईन की तरह काम किया। उन्होंने येसु से चिन्ह की मांग की और ईश्वर को स्वीकार करने से इनकार कर दिया। ऐसा करने में उन्होंने अपनी गलतियों और खुद बदलाव लाने की आवश्यकता को स्वीकार करने से इनकार कर दिया। ईश्वर द्वारा अपनाये जाने और स्वीकार किए जाने से बेहतर उपहार की उम्मीद कोई नहीं कर सकता। आमेन।

📚 REFLECTION

The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain his offering he had no regard. It is not certain why God rejected Cain’s offering. Probably his attitude was improper or the offering didn’t match God’s dignity. In offering to God, he takes note of our motives and the quality of what we offer – our time, our talents, and efforts. After being rejected, God gave Cain a chance to correct the mistake and to try again. Cain refused, and the rest of his life is a startling example of what happens to those who refuse to admit their mistakes. The Pharisees acted like Cain. They demanded signs and refused to acknowledge God. In doing so they refused to admit their mistakes and their need for conversion. No one can hope for a better privilege than to be regarded and accepted by God. What should I do that I can be regarded and accepted by God?
